I myself would wake up at night on seeing a flash of light and find myself counting seconds. If the thunder came in less than a minute or two, I figured it was lightning; otherwise, I would wonder if it was a distant atomic explosion. Fortunately, the sound always came quickly. (I could distinguish heat lightning that has no sound.) I also knew without paying much conscious attention to it which way the wind was blowing, so as to be able to figure out fallout patterns.
